SNOW

SNOW pen is a beauty. The
oversize black and white piece
evokes images of gently falling
snow against the night sky in the
mountains of China. We chose
to use the traditional technique
called “rankaku” (eggshell inlay)
for artistic expression. Small bits
of eggshells are placed on
design drawn on pen body. The
soft, warm effect of eggshell and
its pure white color, impossible
to produce in lacquer, was
prized in the old days. The egg-
shell pieces are embedded in
lacquer; then exposed again by
polishing to achieve the image
of gently falling snow against
the night sky.
